In 2023/2024, the New Zealand Down Syndrome Association (NZDSA) undertook a comprehensive redesign of its website to better serve its diverse user base.

It became clear through various channels—committee discussions, user feedback, and direct engagement with self-advocates—that the previous website lacked user-friendliness and visual appeal. Given that the site is accessed by individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, creating an intuitive and accessible digital experience was essential.

Following a series of Zoom and in-person meetings with the NZDSA committee, self-advocates, and other stakeholders, a clear plan was developed. The primary objective was to ensure the website was easy to navigate for users of all abilities. This involved incorporating visual elements such as photographs, icons, and color-coded pathways to guide users seamlessly to the information they need.

Working on this project was a deeply rewarding experience. It allowed me to combine my passion for website and graphic design with my commitment to supporting individuals with Down syndrome. The result is a website that I am incredibly proud of—one that reflects both functionality and inclusivity.
